We have teamed up with Plymouth University to help support first-year paramedic students gain vital frontline experience.
The initiative will see students undertake a week-long work placement across three of our nursing homes. The programme is specifically designed to bridge the gap between clinical theory and person-centred care, focusing on building the communication skills and confidence necessary for future paramedics when interacting with diverse resident and patient groups.
While paramedic training often focuses on acute emergency response, this scheme highlights the importance of understanding the complex needs of the elderly and those in long-term care. By spending a full week within the nursing home environment, students will develop a deeper empathy and a more nuanced approach to patient history-taking and bedside manner.
“We are delighted to partner with Swallowcourt for this essential part of our students’ development,” said Anna Harvey, Placement Coordinator and Practice Educator at Plymouth University.
“Effective communication is the foundation of paramedicine. Giving our first-year students the opportunity to engage with residents in a non-emergency setting allows them to build the confidence required to handle sensitive situations throughout their careers.”
During the placement, students will shadow experienced care staff and engage directly with residents, learning how to adapt their communication styles for individuals with varying needs, including those living with dementia or sensory impairments.
“We are proud to welcome the next generation of healthcare professionals into our homes,” said Alex Davies, Group Marketing Manager at Swallowcourt. “Our residents enjoy the interaction with the students, and our staff are eager to share their expertise in long-term care. This partnership not only benefits the students’ professional growth but also enriches the daily lives of those who live in our homes.”
The scheme is now active, with students rotating through all three of our Swallowcourt locations as part of their introductory year of study.
